Finally Clay - The First ATP Clay Court Tournaments of 2026 Are Underway
After the opening hard‑court months of the season, the ATP Tour has turned to the surface that defines tactical baseline tennis: clay. The early clay swing of 2026 is happening now across South America, offering fans a first look at how players adapt their games for the red dirt.
Where It’s Happening
🎾 Argentina Open – Buenos Aires (ATP 250)
The clay season kicked off with the IEB+ Argentina Open, an ATP 250 event played on outdoor clay at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club from 9–15 February 2026. Argentine top seed Francisco Cerúndolo claimed the title, defeating fellow Argentine Luciano Darderi 6–4, 6–2 in the final. It was Cerúndolo’s first Argentina Open crown and his fourth ATP Tour title overall, and a big moment for him in front of his home crowd.
🎾 Rio Open – Rio de Janeiro (ATP 500)
Following Buenos Aires, the clay swing continued with the Rio Open presented by Claro, a higher‑tier ATP 500 event taking place from 16–22 February 2026 at the Jockey Club Brasileiro. The draw features a mix of established clay specialists and all‑court players. Among the early action, Brazilian João Fonseca notched his first win of the season, while Italian Matteo Berrettini and Argentine players including Tomás Martín Etcheverry and Juan Manuel Cerúndolo advanced in the tournament. Argentine top seed Francisco Cerúndolo was forced to retire in his second‑round match due to a back injury, giving Thiago Agustín Tirante a walkover into the quarterfinals.
Why This Transition Matters
“Finally clay” isn’t just a phrase - it marks a key phase in the ATP calendar where:
-
long rallies and topspin dominance become essential,
-
tactical patience is rewarded,
-
and strong movement and endurance are tested.
Success here often foreshadows deeper runs in the European clay season that follows in March and April, leading toward marquee events like Monte‑Carlo, Madrid and eventually Roland Garros.
This early period gives fans plenty to enjoy: enthusiastic crowds, players rediscovering their clay‑court rhythm and dynamic tennis action that’s both strategic and exciting. Stay tuned as the clay swing develops - this surface always delivers its own special flavour of tennis!
